Outside Shot Abandons Blue Streaks In Loss At Bethany

For a team that averages ten three-point field goals made per game, the baskets at Hummel Field House on Saturday must have looked like tea cups to the John Carroll men's basketball players.

Enduring its worst shooting performance from three-point range in over a year, the #9 ranked Blue Streaks fell, 85-63, in a non-conference match-up to Betahny College.

The game was close early on as the opening 12 minutes featured three lead changes and four ties. When Corey Shontz drained a pair of free throws at the 8:58 mark of the first half, JCU took an 18-16 advantage.

Bethany would then respond with a devastating 15-0 run from which the Blue Streaks never recovered. During the four-and-a-half minute stretch when the host squad turned a two-point deficit into a 13-point lead, John Carroll missed all three of its shots, turned the ball over three times and allowed six second chance points.

At the half, Bethany held a 40-26 edge.

Any thoughts of a comeback were quashed in the opening nine minutes of the second period, when Bethany was able to stretch its lead from 14 to a game-high 25 points.

Bethany (8-3), which won ist sixth consecutive game, received a monster effort from Joe Testa, who hit 11-of-19 from the floor to set a career-high with a game-high 25 points. Testa also hauled down 20 a game-best rebounds.

Dustin Opalka added 18 points while Nick Wilcox chipped in 10 points and 11 boards as Bethany won the battle of the glass, 52-34.

John Carroll (7-4), which lost its second game in a row and its fourth in the last five, was paced by 21 points from Matt Crozier and 19 from Shontz. The Blue Streaks managed to shoot just 3-22 (.136) from three-point range, its lowest mark since going 3-19 (.158) in an 82-70 loss at Ohio Northern on Dec. 20, 2008.
