Frank Ross (#12) became the second member of the 2,000-yard receiving club in the history of JCU football Saturday
On the 90th birthday of John Carroll football, the Otterbein Cardinals spoiled the party by scoring the first 31 points of the game en route to a 56-28 win over John Carroll.
Box Score
John Carroll played its first football game -- as St. Ignatius College -- on October 2, 1920. On that day, the "Saints" as they were known then edged the Hiram terriers, 7-2.
The Blue Streaks were hoping for another close one today, and had another piece of history seemingly in their favor. The last three games in the John Carroll vs. Otterbein series were marked by dramatic finishes.
On this day, there would be no drama in Westerville.
Otterbein took the opening kickoff and marched 49 yards in seven plays to set up a David Brewer 33-yard field goal.
After a three-and-out by John Carroll, Otterbein would score its first touchdown on an 8-yard pass from Austin Schlosser to Trey Fairchild.
In taking a 10-0 first quarter lead, the Cardinals had outgained the Blue Streaks, 119-27.
After falling behind 17-0, two consecutive turnovers by John Carroll gave the home team a short field to work with, and both times the penalty would be touchdowns. When Schlosser connected with Steve Kuzyk for a 32-yard strike, it gave the Cardinals a 31-0 lead with 8:45 left in the second quarter.
Otterbein looked to be driving for yet another score when the John Carroll defense rose up.
Dominique Hopkins stepped in front of a Schlosser pass and raced 76 yards for the touchdown. It was John Carroll's first interception of 2010.
The score still left 4:09 on the clock, and Otterbein used the remaining time to score its final touchdown of the half on a second Schlosser-to-Kuzyk hook up.
The Blue Streaks would score 21 points to Otterbein's 18 in the second half, but the damage was done.
Frank Ross caught a pair of touchdown passes from
Devin O'Brien, and Teree Harris tacked on his second touchdown of the year in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring in the game.
Otterbein (3-1, 2-1 OAC) gained 421 yards of offense, and was led on the ground by Colton Coy (21-108, 1 TD) and through the air by Schlosser (12-19-200, 4 TD, 1 INT).
John Carroll (1-3, 1-2 OAC) was led by O'Brien, who was the leading rusher (12-57) and passer (19-33-170, 2 TD, 2 INT) for the Blue Streaks.
On a historical day for the JCU program, Ross made history of his own. His 12 receptions for 108 yards enabled him to become just the second Blue Streak player to reach 2,000 career receiving yards. His 2,037 joins him with Jeff lerner (2,580 from 1999-2002) as the only members of this elite club.
The 56 points were the most scored by an Otterbein team against John Carroll, and the 28 points represented the Cardinals largest margin of victory in the series.
