Wins In First Five Events Gets JCU Women's Swimming Season Off To Strong Start

Victoria Taggart was part of a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 IM during JCU's season-opening meet against Wilmington
Looking for a strong start, John Carroll got exactly that by winning the first five events Saturday afternoon at the William H. Johnson Natatorium.

Those points would come into play as part of a 119-78 season-opening victory over Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilington College

Results

The women's 200 medley relay of Julia Adams, Emma Atkinson, Katie Mathews and Brittany Bockanic won by nearly five seconds to start off the meet, clocking in at 1:56.44

Megan Carrig and Adams would finish 1-2 in the 1000-yard free. Carrig (11:44.48) would nip Adams (11:44.89) at the finish, but JCU still wound up picking up 14 points in that event alone.

Carrig would also claim victory later in the meet in the 500 Free (5:45.58).

Rachel Mizner, the reigning OAC Swimmer of the Year, started her sophomore campaign off with a convincing victory in the 200 Free (2:03.74), winning by over four seconds over Wilmington's Julie Creech (2:08.12).  Later in the meet, Mizner would also place first in the 100 Free (57.48).

Bockanic added to her win total, this time as an individual, by touching first in the 50 Free. She hit the wall in 26.79, followed closely by her Blue Streak teammate Atkinson at 27.23.

John Carroll's fifth consecutive win to start the meet was marked by a 1-2-3 showing in the 200 IM. Maggie Donoghue (2:23.51), Brittany Krauth (2:25.72) and Victoria Taggart (2:28.00) led the sweep of the top three places.

Also winning races for the JCU women were Adams in the 100 Back (1:01.68) and Sara Needham in the 100 Breast (1:15.25). Needham touched first but did not claim team points.

JCU swam the fastest time in the 200 Free Relay as Mizner, Atkinson, Lindsay Pickut and Carrig teamed up for a time of 1:49.29.
