Kyle Hubbard scored a career-high 18 points for John Carroll in his first game as a Blue Streak since February of 2008
As far as rivalries go, the John Carroll-Medaille clash makes up with intensity what it lacks in longevity.
An NCAA nailbiter in 2008-09 (won by the Blue Streaks) followed by a one-point decision in 2009-10 (won by the Mavericks) set the stage for the 2010-11 season opener that saw a big John Carroll lead nearly evaporate before the visitors pulled away late for an 82-70 victory Monday night in Buffalo, New York.

Ranked #18 to start the season, John Carroll was eager to prove its lofty status was earned and not simply a vote on reputation. Standing in the way would be a team that had beaten the Blue Streaks on their home floor just a season ago.
Forcing 19 first-half turnovers while shooting 60 percent (6-10) from three-point range helped John Carroll build a substantial 48-29 lead by the time halftime was reached.
But the Mavericks, who have matched the Blue Streaks the last two years with two conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances, would not go away quietly.
JCU still led 59-42 after a
Conor Tilow lay-up with 14:13 to play, but Medaille used a 19-5 run over the next six minutes to pull to within a single possession. Angel Flores split a pair of free throws to cut the Blue Streaks' advantage to 64-61 with 8:06 showing on the second half clock.
Friom there, John Carroll was able to right its ship. An 8-0 run, sparked by six points from
Maurice Haynes II, built the lead back up to 72-61 with just over five minutes to play in regulation.
Medaille never got closer than eight points down the stretch.
"I'm happy to start the season with a win," said Mike Moran regarding the opening of his 19th season as head coach at John Carroll. "We had some unsung heroes ... guys we really didn't anticipate to play so well.
Kyle Hubbard did a great job coming in tonight and establishing an inside presence."
It was indeed a strong re-debut for Hubbard, who played in his first varsity game as a Blue Streak since February 27, 2008. In 12 official minutes, Hubbard scored a team-high 18 points for John Carroll (1-0), and made all eight of his free throws.
"This team helps to stabalize me on the floor,' said Hubbard afterwards. "They help me bring my thought-process full circle. The family aspect of this team helps everyone stay focused."
Haynes had 14 points and Tilow added ten as JCU finished the game with a solid 15-18 (.833) effort from the charity stripe, including 11-12 (.917) in the pivotal second half.
Ron Malicki scored a game-high 25 points for Medaille (0-1), which had a far tougher night at the free throw line (8-18, .444). Ricky Reed was the only other Maverick in double figures with 15 points.
