Matt Loya and the Blue Streaks found tough sledding through Purple Raider waters Wednesday
The men's swimming and diving team dropped their first meet of the 2010-11 season, coming up on the short end of a 138-101 decision with Ohio Athletic Conference foe Mount Union.
It was the Blue Streaks first loss of the season, dropping their overall record to 1-1 on the year after a season-opening win over Wilmington on October 23rd.
Junior
Alex Vereshchagin (Solon, OH, Solon), competing for the first time this season, had a hand in the Blue Streaks successes. He won the 50 Freestyle with a time of 21.80, narrowly edging out Mount Union's Mike Greisl who touched the wall in 22.22.
The junior from Solon then captured the top spot in the 100 Breaststroke in a dominating effort, finishign in 1:02.40 while the next closest competitor was almost seven seconds behind.
John Carroll had success in the relays as their top three teams finished 1-2-3. The quartet of
David Telling (Greenwich, CT, Greenwich ),
Evan Coury (Sewickley, PA, Quaker Valley),
Matt Loya (South Euclid, OH, Brush) and
Andy Petraska (Euclid, OH, Cleveland St. Ignatius) finished in 3:26.27 to win that event.\
The meet with Mount Union was John Carroll's second conference meet of the season, but their last until they take on Ohio Northern in late January. The Blue Streaks, however, will return to the pool on Friday night when they host neighborhood foe Notre Dame College at 7 p.m. inside Johnson Natatorium.
