Blue Streaks Bounce Back With Big Second Half At Baldwin-Wallace

Mark Hester scored 11 points coming off the bench in his 2010-11 debut
With the exception of its lone senior, no one else on the John Carroll men's basketball roster had ever experienced a three-game losing streak while wearing a Blue Streak uniform.

Thanks to a 28-point swing Tuesday night in Berea, that will be an experience the Blue Streak underclassmen will gladly put on hold.

Outscoring the host Yellow Jackets by a 53-29 margin over the final 20 minutes, John Carroll snapped its two-game skid with an 82-73 win over crosstown and Ohio Athletic Conference rival Baldwin-Wallace at Ursprung Gymnasium.

Box Score

John Carroll started out the game strong by scoring 11 of the first 17 points, but it did not take long for fotunes to change. Baldwin-Wallace would take a 12-11 lead on a pair of Kevin Krakoviak free throws at the 14:28 mark

The Baldwin-Wallace advantage was still in the single digits until the Blue Streaks went bone dry. A stretch of over four minutes without a JCU field goal was part of a 18-4 run that pushed the home team's lead to 19 points at 44-25 with 1:27 left to play.

JCU would tag the last four points onto the scoreboard to cut the deficit to 15 points.

"We did get some good looks from high-percentage areas in the first half and they weren't falling," said John Carroll head coach Mike Moran.

Baldwin-Wallace shot 16-31 (.516) from the field in the first half, including 3-7 (.429) from three point range. The Streaks, in contrast, were 10-27 (..370) from the floor in the opening period of play.

The John Carroll comeback in the second half began almost immediately. Maurice Haynes II (Cleveland, OH, Villa Angela-St. Joseph)-- the only player on the team to have experienced a losing streak longer than two games at John Carroll as well as the only player to have been on the losing side against Baldwin-Wallace-- sliced the home team's lead to single digits on a lay-up at the 17:08 mark.

JCU still trailed by eight points, however, with 12:25 left. Krakowiak dropped in a lay-up to put the Yellow Jackets ahead, 56-48.

Shontz vs BW 122110
For the remainder of the game, it would be all Blue Streaks.

"I think we really had a sense of urgency in the second half," said junior Corey Shontz (Andover, OH, Pymatuning Valley). "We knew we were down but not really getting out-played, and we had to make a run before the game got out of hand. Even though I only shot 1-6 in the first half, I knew I was taking decent shots. I just kept attacking the basket and continued to look for open guys to finish strong at the rim."

John Carroll would score 13 unanswered points, with Michael Hartnett tying the game at 56-56 with a three-pointer with 10:34 showing on the clock.

A Haynes free throw and a Shontz lay-up completed the run and put the Streak out front, 59-56.

"The biggest thing that we did in the second half was that we showed patience even though we were down," said Moran, "Once the second half rolled around, Shontz and Mike Hartnett (North Royalton, OH, Lakewood St. Edward)got some better looks, and Mo Haynes seemed to get the ball whenever he wanted to tonight. We just had a greater will to win in the second half."

After Kyle Payne stopped the one JCU run with a lay-up, the Blue Streaks continued their upswing by scoring 12 of the next 15 points. Joey Meyer's free throws with 5:34 to play put the visitors ahead by ten points, 71-61.

Baldwin-Wallace would cut the John Carroll lead back to six points on three occasions, the last of which was 75-69 with 1:08 to play, but the Streaks made their only field goal attempt and went 5-5 downt he stretch to preserve the win.

Haynes scored a season- and game-high 25 points for John Carroll (7-3, 3-2 OAC), which defeated Baldwin-Wallace for the fifth consecutive time. Shontz added 18 points, while Mark Hester (Ashtabula, OH, Lakeside)scored ten points in his 2010-11 debut and Hartnett dropped in ten. JCU was 18-33 (.545) from the field in the second half while limiting the yellow Jackets to just seven field goals.

"I just wanted to do whatever I needed to do on the floor tonight to help the team win....I just wanted to play my game," said Hester of his first action since scoring five points against Baldwin-Wallace on December 2, 2009. "I wasn''t going to try to do too much. I know I have talented teammates who are very good players and if I just played my game, things would work out."

Baldwin-Wallace (3-7, 2-4 OAC) was led by four players in double figures. Payne, Chris Ameen and Promis Cabbil all had 15, while Krakowiak tallied 14.
