Joey Meyer picked the right time to get hot from the outside as JCU won its ninth consecutive game
There was a time that Seiberling Gymnasium was a house of horrors for the Blue Streaks.
For a period of time Wednesday evening, it looked like the haunting had returned.
Yet, despite Heidelberg making 12 of its first 16 shots and shooting over 60 percent for the first half, John Carroll survived to wrap up an outright Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title with a victory over the Student Princes.
Box Score
Heidelberg was the last team to beat John Carroll with a come-from-behind 85-81 victory at the DeCarlo Varsity Center back on January 13, but didn't seem interested in any late game dramatics. After
Michael Hartnett's three-pointer pulled John Carroll to within two points at 15-13 at the 13:16 mark, the Student Princes began to roll. Fueled by back-to-back three pointers by Josh Calver, and capped by a Nate Davis dunk, Heidelberg pulled out to a 27-15 lead.
Another Davis dunk with just over five minutes left to play in the period would stake the hosts to their largest advantage of 13 points, 35-22.
Starting with consecutive three balls by
Chris Zajac and
Brian Dandrea , John Carroll would close the half on a 21-5 run. With
Rudy Kirbus scoring the final five points, John Carroll took a 43-40 lead into the break.
The opening 13 minutes of the second half were a back-and forth affair with neither team leading by any more than five minutes. But JCU offered up the first surge when
Tyler Kirsch knocked down a three to put John Carroll ahead 77-70 at the 6:51.
Shortly after Heidelberg had cut the Blue Streak down to a pair of points on two occasions, the Streaks surged again. Joey Meyer's three-pointer with 3:40 left gave John Carroll its largest lead of the contest at 85-77.
From there, JCU would keep Heidelberg at bay, never letting its lead drop below five points.
John Carroll (18-5, 14-5 OAC), which won its ninth straight, had five players in double figures led by Meyer with 15.
Corey Shontz added 14 points and five assists, while Kirbus (13),
Matt Crozier (13) and Zajac (11) also contributed solid efforts. JCU finished the game 15-29 (.517) from three-point range in clinching the top seed in the OAC Tournament which begins next week.
Heidelberg (12-12, 8-9 OAC), which dropped its sixth consecutive game, got 19 points apiece from Calver Dane Givner. The Student princes finished the game shooting 34-61 (.557) from the fieldbut turned the ball over 20 times.
