Tom Arth, shown here during his days as an Indianapolis Colt, is returning to his alma mater to help coordinate the Blue Streaks offense
Tom Arth, a record-setting All-American quarterback during his time as a John Carroll University football player, is returning to his alma mater in a coaching capacity.
John Carroll head coach Regis Scafe announced that Arth has been hired as an assistant football coach for the Blue Streaks program, holding the titles of Co-Offensive Coordinator and Director of Football Operations.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Tom Arth to our coaching staff, “ said Scafe, who has been the head coach of the football team at John Carroll since 1999 (which was Arth's freshman year at the school). “He is coming back home. He was a great player for us … as a captain and quarterback, he guided us to an NCAA Division III Final Four appearance and an Eastern Regional Championship. His professional experience beyond John Carroll will definitely be a huge plus for our players.”
From 1999 until 2002, Arth rewrote the John Carroll record book and picked up some awards along the way. As a junior and senior, Arth was a unanimous All-American selection at the Division III level as well as a first team All-OAC quarterback. He would graduate as the owner of 18 school records, including 10,345 passing yards, 741 completions and 89 touchdowns.
At the conclusion of his collegiate playing days, Arth was signed as a free agent following the 2003 National Football League draft and spent three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts organization as a back-up to Peyton Manning. He was also in the Green Bay Packers camp with Bret Favre in 2006.
Arth also gained professional experience by playing two seasons in NFL Europe and one season in the Arena Football League.
“He will bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our program,” said Scafe. “Tom is an outstanding individual and person, with a passion for football, and a love for John Carroll University.”
In addition to his main areas of responsibility, Arth will also serve as the quarterbacks coach, the team's academic coordinator and the assistant recruiting coordinator.
“John Carroll is a special place for me and I am extremely excited about the opportunity to come back and contribute positively to the football program and University that has given so much to me,” said Arth. “I look forward to the challenge and also to the successes that I know are on the horizon."
