As the pitcher of record against Muskingum, Chris Eggleton picked up his second win of the week
For the John Carroll baseball team, March 27 was a day for offense to be sure at the Muskingum Invitational.
The twist was 12 runs proved to be not enough to win one game, while 13 runs proved to be to much for another team to handle.
Box Scores:
Game One vs. Montclair State /
Game Two vs. Muskingum
John Carroll surrendered its highest amount of runs in six years in suffering a 20-12 loss to Montclair State in the first game it played this afternoon. All nine starters for Montclair had at least one hit and one RBI as the Red Hawks pounded out 24 hits.
The game itself was a strange affair as the two teams scored a robust 15 runs through the first six innings before erupting for 17 in the last two and a half.
John Skomra (Buffalo, NY, Canisius) and
Brian Benander (Richmond Heights, OH, Cleveland St. Ignatius) each had three hits to lead the JCU offense.
After playing four hours to start the day, JCU was involved in another marathon but this time of its own doing. Against host Muskingum, the Blue Streaks overcame an early 2-1 deficit to produce a 13-2 victory thanks to an eight-run fifth inning.
The highlight was a grand slam by
Ryan Pacyga (Forest Park, IL, Nazareth Academy), who finished the day with two homers and six RBI. Pacyga becomes the just the fourth John Carroll player to hit two home runs in the same game in the last ten years, joining Craig Recko (vs, Otterbein in 2001), Mike Mendolera (vs. Thomas More in 2003) and Adam Sockel (vs. Wooster in 2008).
Chris Eggleton (Brecksville, OH, Brecksville )earned his second win of 2010 to improve to 2-0, while
Tony Evanko worked the final three scoreless innings for his first save of the season.
