Michael Hulseman (foreground) and Ross Venzke delivered a doubles points for JCU against first place Ohio Northern
In rare instances, the final score is not an accurate telling of the true nature of a contest.
Today at Purvis Park, that theory could be applied to John Carroll's 7-2 loss to Ohio Athletic Conference co-leader Ohio Northern.
Box Score
The Polar Bears were riding a ten-match winning streak and were undefeated in league play. That seemed to matter little to the host Blue Streaks.
All three doubles matches went down to the wire.
Chad Ruehs and
Ryan Mullaney dropped a heartbreaker at #1 doubles, losing to Nick Kowalcayk and Joey Frank by a 7-3 count in a tiebreaker.
Alex Millar, playing in his first match since the fall of 2008, teamed with fellow senior Matt Tomayko and took Ohio Northern's winningest duo of Jeff Carter and Andrew Korba to the limit before falling 8-6.
JCU did snare one point in doubles play as Ross Venzke and
Michael Hulseman posted an 8-6 win at #3 doubles over Matt Dutro and Mike King.
In singles play, four of the six matches were close but only one fell the Blue Streaks way. Ruehs pulled out a 6-4 7-5 win at #3 singles over Carter, who began the day leading ONU in victories this season with 15.
Both Mullaney and Venzke lost in three sets at #1 and #5 singles, respectively.
Ohio Northern is now 13-2 overall and 6-0 in the OAC, while John Carroll drops to 3-6 overall and 3-3 in elague play.
