It was a tough afternoon for the bats but still managed to be a semi-successful day for the Blue Streaks, as John Carroll maintained its upper hand in the Ohio Athletic Conference softball playoff chase with a split in Marietta Sunday.
Box Scores: Game One / Game Two
John Carroll recorded just four hits but scored the only two runs of game one as the Streaks blanked the host Pioneers, 2-0.
The hero was Brittany Danilov (Canfield, OH, Canfield), who did her part by pitching seven shutout innings and scattered five hits while striking out a season-high ten. She improved to 12-9 on the season.
JCU manufactured its first run, turning a hit by pitch into a score. Olivia Mathews (Suffield, OH, Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) was hit to lead off the second, and then came around to score on a Sam Thompson (Cheektowaga, NY, Maryvale) single and throwing error.
Thompson later put the Blue Streaks' second run on the board with a solo home run in the seventh.
In the nightcap, John Carroll scored first on a Mathews RBI single in the first, but after that it was all Marietta. The Pioneers scored six runs on 11 hits in a 6-1 triumph.
John Carroll is now 21-15 overall and 8-6 (3rd place) in the OAC. Marietta is now 18-13 and 6-8 (T-5th) in league play. Both teams have four conference games remaining.
