Softball Gets Back To .500 With Pair Of Convincing Wins Over Case Reserve

On Wednesday afternoon at Case Reserve, sophomore Olivia Mathews went 5-9 with two doubles, one home run and six RBI
As far as responses go to a six-game losing streak, the one offered up by the John Carroll softball team has been quite the statement.

Reaching double figures in both games for the second consecutive doubleheader, the Blue Streaks rolled to wins over Case Reserve by the scores of 11-1 and 10-6.

Box Scores:  Game One  /  Game Two

The victories run John Carroll's current winning streak to four games.

John Carroll ran out to a 7-0 lead in the opener and closed out the Spartans in five innings. Olivia Mathews (Suffield, OH, Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) had a bases loaded double in the first inning as part of a four-run uprising.

The very next inning after Case had cut JCU's lead to 7-1, the Streaks answered with three more runs -- two coming off a Natalie Rose (West Linn, OR, Lakeridge) double -- in the top of the fourth. An RBI by Mathews pushed the advantage to 11-1 in the fifth.

Brittany Danilov (Canfield, OH, Canfield)worked a complete game, allowing one run on three hits.

JCU seemed on the way to another laugher in the second game, scoring seven times in the second inning. Laura Boselovic (Wexford, PA, North Allegheny)(single), Michelle Murphy (Erie, PA, Villa Maria Academy)(tripled), Mackenzie Griffin (Lake Oswego, OR, Lakeridge) (single) had RBI hits to plate the first four runs, after which Erin Riccardi and Mathews hit back-to-bak home runs to score the last three.

Case, however, did not go away. A four-run fourth inning cut John Carroll's lead to 7-5. But two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh enabled the Streaks to complete the sweep.

Sam Thompson (Cheektowaga, NY, Maryvale) improved to 5-4 with the win.

John Carroll, which has scored 43 runs in its last four games, is now 11-11 on the year. The losses drop Case Reserve's record to 7-23.
