Tom Hickey's RBI double sparked a late rally for the Blue Streaks in Meadville Tuesday
In their first out of conference matchup since they took on Case Western Reserve University on April 20, the Blue Streaks baseball team headed to western Pennsylvania for a doubleheader with Allegheny College and split a pair with the host Gators on their 'Senior Day'.
One of those seniors, Matt Dishong, made sure he went out on top and fired a complete game (seven inning) shutout in game one as his team came out on top, 4-0. The Blue Streaks responded with a come-from-behind victory in the second game, returning to Ohio with an 8-6 victory.
Box Scores:
Game One/
Game Two
Just five Blue Streaks reached base in the first game as Dishong kept the visiting team at bay all afternoon. He struck out seven while scattering three hits and allowing two walks.
Allegheny got Dishong the lead in the second inning when Chad Starzer belted a solo homer. The Gators then tacked on two more in the third when Andy Schleihauf took
Tom Schaberl deep for a two-run shot. Those would be the only three runs Schaberl would allow in his three innings of work.
Chris Eggleton relieved Schaberl in the fourth inning and went the final three innings allowing just one run, but the Blue Streak offense never could solve Dishong.
Their best chance came in the first inning when leadoff man
John Skomra and the third batter in the lineup, Brian Bernander, both walked. With two on and one out, Dishong got out of his only jam of the afternoon.
Just like in the first game, the Blue Streaks quickly found themselves in a 3-0 hole after Allegheny put a run on the board in the first and added two more in the second. However, as they have done all season, the pesky Blue Streaks wouldn't go away easily.
They responded in the top of the third when freshman catcher
Aaron Miller got things started with a leadoff double. His classmate Pat Stone moved him over to third base, and then freshman centerfielder
Joe Veltri singled to drive in the first run of the game for John Carroll.
Senior
Tim O'Brien singled and Brian Bernander walked to load the bases with just one out. After a sacrifice fly by senior
Bryan Robinett moved everybody up 90 feet and pushed the second run across the plate,
Tom Hickey tied the game. The sophomore first baseman singled in O'Brien and tied the ballgame at three.
With the game tied at three, senior
Chris Koller entered the game to replace starting pitcher
John Moonan who allowed three runs in his two innings of work. The Gators came back strong and answered the Blue Streaks three runs with three of their own to take a 6-3 lead after three.
That cushion would not be safe when the Blue Streaks got to the heart of their order in the fifth inning. Bernander and Robinett walked to get things started. With two on and nobody out, Hickey laced a double that plated both Bernander and Robinett and made it a one-run game.
Freshman
Ryan Pacyga followed that up with a single that scored Hickey. Junior shortstop
John Hastings kept the hit-parade going with a single that moved Pacyga to second base, and then Pacyga and Hastings advanced one additional base on a passed ball.
The young Blue Streaks continued to give a glimpse of the future when
Aaron Miller singled to score Pacyga and Hastings and give John Carroll their first lead of the afternoon. In total, the Blue Streaks got five runs on four hits in that gift-wrapped inning from the Gators.
That offensive outburst would be all the back-end of the Blue Streak bullpen would need as Rob Bellusci and
Michael Eden would allow just two hits over their combined four innings to preserve the victory. Bellusci earned his first collegiate victory, while Eden picked up his team-leading fourth save.
The Blue Streaks will return to conference play this weekend with a busy slate. They host Ohio Northern University for a pair on Saturday, and then travel to Wilmington on Sunday for their final regular season games of the season.
