Junior 165-pounder Clarence Semple was the lone Blue Streak to take a lead into the third period against Mount Union
For the John Carroll wrestling team, Tuesday night's match at Mount Union was an unintentional lesson in the law of physics. More specifically, how a few small snowballs can become an avalanche.
Some close losses early in the dual meet fueled the downhill momentum, as #10 ranked Mount Union handed John Carroll a 34-0 defeat. It was just the third shutout loss in program history, and the first to an Ohio Athletic Conference school.
The Blue Streaks lost four of the first seven bouts by two points or less, but Clarence Semple (Cleveland, OH, Lakewood St. Edward) was the only JCU wrestler who took a lead into the third period. Semple was up 4-2 in his 165-pound bout against John Piechuta, but gave up two takedowns in the third to fall by a 7-5 count.
John Cobos (Avon Lake, OH, Lakewood St. Edward) lost 3-1 at 125, while Greg Ryan (Warren, OH, Howland) (141) and Todd Gaydosh (North Royalton, OH, Parma Padua Franciscan) (174) both dropped 2-1 decisions.
The only other shutout losses in JCU history were 36-0 to Cleveland State on February 19, 1974, and 32-0 to Wartburg on December 29, 1994.
JCU is now 3-6 overall and 0-3 in the OAC. Mount Union, led by head coach Mark Hawald (a former JCU All-American wrestler), is now 11-0 and 3-0 in the OAC.
