Emily Bendzak was a standout in her role as a first time libero with a career-high 28 digs against Ohio Northern
The phrase "off the schneid" has its roots in baseball as well as the card game known as "gin". In modern sports lexicon it is a figure of speech that means to end a losing streak or to stop a long run of negatives with a positive.
The John Carroll volleyball team hoped it would get off the schneid Friday evening in Ada, and their early efforts suggested the possibility was attainable. But after two heartbreaking losses in which they led late in both set one and set two, JCU could not prevent a sweep at the hands of host Ohio Northern.
Box Score
JCU led 22-21 in the opener, but after a Polar Bear timeout, the host squad ripped off four consecutive points to take the game, 25-22.
The second set went extra time, but after being knotted at 26-26, the Polar Bears seized an opportunity with a JCU attack error and served out the frame to take it by a 28-26 score.
Perhaps with their spirits wounded, the Streaks fell behind 5-1 in the third set and never recovered in falling by a 25-16 count.
Gina Catania had a team-high 11 kills to go with a team-best 15 assists, while Emily bendzak produced a career-high 28 digs in her first match as libero for John Carroll, which fell to 9-16 overall and 0-7 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
