Erin Riccardi had three RBI in both of John Carroll's victories over Otterbein in its 2011 OAC opener
A combined six runs batted in for
Erin Riccardi (North Canton, Hoover) and a record-breaking win by pitcher
Brittany Danilov (Canfield, OH, Canfield) were two reasons why John Carroll softball took two games from Otterbein Saturday in Westerville.
JCU won game one by a 9-1 score in five innings, then took game two by a 7-5 count.
In a bizarre circumstance where JCU retained home team status in games that had to be moved to Westerville, Ohio, due to weather issues in University Heights, the Blue Streaks still made the most of a less than ideal situation.
Box Scores:
Game One /
Game Two
All the offense the Blue Streaks would need would be scored in the second inning. JCU plated seven runs on five hits, and kept the pressure on throughout.
Rebecca Reid (Cleveland, OH, Magnificat) opened the scoring when she came home on a wild pitch.
Mackenzie Griffin (Lake Oswego, OR, Lakeridge) followed with an RBI single.
Riccardi started her productive day with a two-run single to push the lead to 4-0.
Ahead 7-1 in the fifth, JCU would end the game when Riccardi and
Michelle Murphy (Erie, PA, Villa Maria Academy) had RBI hits to pusg the margin to eight runs.
Danilov became the program's all-time leader in career victories with her 43rd win. She worked five innings and allowed just one run on three hits to improve to 8-3 on the year.
Danilov had been tied with Kristin Platz (42 wins from 2003-06) for the most wins by a Blue Streak pitcher entering play today.
In the nightcap, John Carroll trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the third innings. Murphy got things rolling with a leadoff double, and then
Samantha Becker (Roselle, IL, Lake Park) followed with a single. After griffin plated the tying run with a single, Riccardi drilled a three-run homer to give JCU a 5-2 advantage.
Anna Fach (Massillon, OH, Perry)completed the five-run frame with an RBI single that scored
Olivia Mathews (Suffield, OH, Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary)Otterbein closed to within two runs by scoring twice in the fifth and once in the seventh, but Danilov closed the door with her first save of the year.
Trisha Pike (Perry, NY, Notre Dame Batavia) struck out five and allowed just two earned runs in four and a third innings of work, improving to 4-1 on the year.
John Carroll is now 12-4 overall and 2-0 in the OAC, while Otterbein fell to 9-7 and 1-3 in the league.
