Jess Hammer uncorked four service aces -- all at opportune times -- as part of a sweep at Ursuline College
John Carroll hard trouble closing out a close game one, so they left litlle in the way of drama for the remainder of the night as the Blue Streaks swept their third opponent in five matches this year with a 25-23, 25-14, 26-16 win over host Ursuline College Tuesday night.
Box Score
JCU had leads of 17-12 and 24-21 but went to the wire with the Arrows in the opening set. After three consecutive kills -- two by Kerry Fox and one by Laura Sudo -- had the Blue Streaks at game point, the Arrows pulled to within 24-23.
But Teresa Noewer had the answer, taking an assist from Fox to put Ursuline away.
Game two featured a terrific service run from Jess Hammer, who sprinkled in two aces during a 7-0 stretch in which JCU turned a 10-7 advantage into a 17-7 rout. The Streaks would go on to claim the middle set by an 11-point margin.
Hammer also came up big in the final frame. Nursing a 13-10 lead, Hammer helped JCU win four consecutive points of which two were courtesy of her back-to-back service aces. The Streaks never looked back.
Sarah Slagle ended the night with nine kills while Hammer had four aces and 12 digs. Fox had 21 assists while Melanie Rodriguez finished up with 20 digs.
JCU is now 4-1 on the year
