Joe Meyer and the Blue Streaks had no answer for Muskingum's suddenly resurgent offense

The concept behind a "trap game" is when one team must play a contest before or after facing a targetted rival opponent. Teams have a tendency to look past an opponent preparing for the  "big game"""big game".

Wednesday in New Concord, John Carroll got "trapped".

For the first time since 2006, the Muskingum University Fighting Muskies got the better of John Carroll, using a career-high 28 points from senior Kyle Clinedinst to stun the first place Blue Streaks, 82-69.

JCU remains in first place despite the loss, but now shares the top perch with Capital, an 82-66 winner over Marietta this evening.

In a match-up of the league's top offense and top defense, it was hard to tell based on the outcome which team belonged to which distinction. It was a Muskingum team that came in scoring a league-fewest 62 points per contest and giving up a league-low 64 points per game that shot a season-best .558 (29-of-52) from the field and connected on 18-of-24 (.750) from the free throw line, which included a 17-of-19 performance in the second half.

In being held to more than 16 points below its league-leading average (85.2 ppg), tonight's game marked the first time John Carroll failed to score 70 points in a game since a 68-66 loss to Ohio Northern on December 11, 2010 -- a span of 32 games.

The Blue Streaks were paced by Corey Shontz who scored 20 points and by Conor Sweeny who added 15.

With the loss, John Carroll slips to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in league play.

Senior Josh Brindley scored 19 points while freshman Logan Kimble added 13 points for the Muskies, who improved to 6-9 overall and 3-5 in the OAC.
