WEEKEND PREVIEW: January 27-28, 2012

| By:
Many players and coaches have contributed to the 999 victories achieved by the John Carroll men's basketball program. Will win number 1000 be achieved Saturday?
One thousand of anything is a large amount, but in terms of basketball victories for a college sports program, it is indeed a benchmark of perseverance. Getting to 1,000 wins before 1,000 losses is also a benchmark of success, and that is what the John Carroll men's basketball team will be shooting for this weekend. Also in action are the women's basketball team at Ohio Northerm, the wrestling team in Illinois, and the track & field teams in Berea. On campus, the JCU swimming & diving teams will host their final home meet of the season, and will honor their 13 seniors.

Men's Basketball:

The Blue Streaks (13-4, 8-3 OAC) will play host to the visiting Ohio Northern University Polar Bears (9-9, 5-6 OAC). Coming off of an impressive win over the Mount Union Purple Raiders on Wednesday, John Carroll will be looking to add another win to their tally this season -- and the 1,000th in the history of their program which dates back to the 1919-1920 school year when the school was known as St. Ignatius College.

After losing to the Polar Bears on Dec. 10 by a score of 82-71, the Blue Streaks will be looking for revenge against Ohio Northern. ONU will come into the game having lost three of their last four games, and will be desperately searching for a win to stop their recent slide. However, the Blue Streaks have other plans as they look to improve upon their current 6-0 mark when playing at home in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The game is set to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday and will be covered through live video, live audio and live stats.

Women's Basketball:

While the men's team will stay at home, the women's team will travel to Ada, Ohio to take on the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears as well.

The Blue Streaks (6-11, 3-8 OAC) will be aiming to end a current three-game losing streak with a win over ONU on Saturday. On the flip side, the Polar Bears (15-3, 9-2 OAC) will be looking to pick up yet another win as they have won six of their last seven games.

After losing to ONU by a score of 67-55 on Dec. 10, JCU will be aiming for revenge as well. The Blue Streaks will depend on sophomore Missy Spahar, who currently leads the OAC in rebounds per game (9.3), to lead them to win but will also need a collective team effort to defeat the talented Polar Bears. Spahar is also third in the OAC in points per game (15.6).

Tip-off for the game is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday. ONU will broadcast the game live on WONB and live stats will be updated as well during the game.

Wrestling:

The John Carroll University wrestling team (5-4, 2-1 OAC) will be in Wheaton, IL this weekend to compete in the Pete Willson Invitational at Wheaton College. Competition will begin at 10 A.M. EST on both Friday and Saturday morning.

The Blue Streaks will be looking to get back on the winning track after a loss to Ohio Northern University on Wednesday snapped JCU's then three match win streak. With only two more regular season meets left before the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament, the Blue Streaks will use the Pete Willson Invitational as a measuring stick type of event.

The Blue Streaks will also be looking to improve upon their mark of tied for 22nd place when competing in the same event last season.

More information on the Invitational can be found here, and Championship matches will be broadcasted live on WETN 88.1 FM.

Swimming and Diving:

Both the men's and women's Blue Streaks swimming and diving teams will play host to the visiting Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jackets on Saturday, Jan. 28 in a match-up between Ohio Athletic Conference rivals.

Competing at the Johnson Natatorium, it will be senior day for the Blue Streaks as this is their final home meet of the 2011-12 season.

The men's team (6-5, 2-1 OAC) will be looking to pick up another win as they have won three of their last four meets. The Blue Streaks will also be looking to avenge a 138.5-103.5 loss to the Yellow Jackets that took place last season.

The women's team (5-7-1, 1-2 OAC) has won three of their last four meets as well, while tying Oberlin College during that period. The women's team also narrowly defeated Baldwin-Wallace by a score of 120.5-116.5 last season and will be in search of another win over the rival Yellow Jackets.

Swimming will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday and the event will have a live video feed available (no audio commentary). A live blog with meet highlights will also be provided.

Track and Field:

John Carroll will compete at the Ohio Athletic Conference North Split Meet on Friday in Berea, Ohio. Joining the Blue Streaks to make up the northern half of the league are Ohio Northern, Heidelberg, Mount Union and host baldwin-Wallace
