D.J. Debick, shown here against Marietta, sparked John Carroll with an early interception on Saturday
Box Score The John Carroll football team went into Saturday's game with the possibility of its first season better than .500 since 2007, as well as its third consecutive win over Wilmington.
Thanks to a strong second quarter and an unrelenting defense, the Blue Streaks prevailed 34-7 and picked up their fifth consectuive victory of the 2012 season.
“Getting the fifth straight win was huge. We had to make sure not to overlook these guys with two big games coming up to finish the season,” said head coach Regis Scafe.
The Blue Streaks opened the game on offense, and drove all the way down to the Wilmington 17 before the drive stalled. An attempt at a 32-yard field goal sailed wide right.
After a JCU defense stop, two straight Blue Streak turnovers left Wilmington with a first and ten at the John Carroll 16-yard line.
With their backs against the wall, the Blue & Gold stepped up when cornerback D.J. Debbick intercepted Wilmington's Brandon Arehart.
“The interception was exciting, obviously because it was my first of the year, but more importantly it helped the team get its first points of the day,” said Debick, who also had two tackles and a pass break-up in the game.
JCU made sure to take advantage of the turnover, as four plays and 55 yards later, Meyers found receiver
Alex Kline for a 7-yard touchdown pass.
Minutes later, the Blue Streaks drive down the field and extended the lead to 13-0 on Myers' second touchdown strike of the game to
Alex Kline. This connection spanned 40 yards.
After getting the ball right back, Myers again went to work, finding
Lane Robilotto open down the middle of the field for a 45-yard score and giving the Blue & Gold a 20-0 lead with just less than two minutes left in the half.
“This was a big win for us. winning five straight is always great but more importantly it gives us confidence going into Heidelberg next week,” Robilotto said.
After the defense forced another quick three and out, the Blue Streak offense would start its final drive of the half with 37 seconds left on the clock. Five plays and 41 yards later, Myers found
Aramis Greenwood open for a 22-yard touchdown catch, his fifth of the season.
On the first drive out of intermission, the Blue & Gold extended the lead to 34-0 when
Sean Kuenzig powered his way into the end zone from three yards out.
Meyers finished the day 22-of-33 for 347 yards with four passing touchdowns and one interception. Robilotto, the preferred target all season, had eight receptions for 142 yards and one touchdown -- he is now only two yards short of 1,000 receiving yards for the season.
Alex Kline caught five passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns, and
Aramis Greenwood also had five receptions for 85 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, linebacker
Kevin Cope led all Blue Streaks with seven tackles, while fellow linebackers
Ethan Jones and
Jimmy King and defensive end
Nick Lasko each recorded five stops.
Next Saturday, the Blue Streaks will head to Tiffin, Ohio to take on the Heidelberg Student Princes for a 1:30 start. Heidelberg is 7-1 after losing to Mount Union earlier this afternoon.
