JCU Men's Swimming And Diving Bounces Back From Mount Loss With Win At Baldwin Wallace

After suffering a tough loss on Friday night on the road against the University of Mount Union, the John Carroll University men's swimming and diving team rebounded nicely the following day with a 159-120 win over the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets.

The victory enabled John Carroll to place fifth as a team in the Cleveland City Championship tournament.

Sophomore Anton Olson was the first to pick up points for the Blue Streaks, winning the 1650-yard Freestyle with a time of 19:06.12. Then, in the 200-yard Freestyle, senior Drew Edson (1st place, 1:49.09) and juniors David Sved (2nd, 1:50.45) and Nick Holvey (3rd, 1:53.29) picked up a combined 16 points in that event alone to help JCU's cause.

Freshman Jacob Crain put together an impressive performance in the 200-yard Butterfly, claiming first place by more than five seconds with a final time of 2:03.58. Crain also won the 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 56.39 while junior Evan Coury finished in second with a time of 57.30.

Holvey also again contributed as he finished in first place in the 50-yard Freestyle with a time of 22.70 while Sved finished in second place with a time of 23.02.

Sved and Edson finished in first and second place, respectively, in the 100-yard Freestyle with respective times of 49.82 and 50.15. To add on to what was already a success-filled day, Edson recorded a first place finish in the 500-yard Freestyle with a time of 5:19.66.

While John Carroll and Baldwin Wallace are Ohio Athletic Conference rivals, the dual meet did not count as a league match-up. The one that did count in the standings was staged Friday night in Alliance, and JCU fell to the host Mount Union Purple Raiders, 125-80.

The Blue Streaks initially struggled to pick up a first place finish before junior Nick Holvey was able to win the 100-yard Freestyle with a finish time of 49.37, just narrowly beating out the second place time of 49.61 posted by Mount Union's Mike Greisl.

Senior Paul Olexa also finished in fourth place in the same event with a time of 52.79.

Freshman Filip Crncek helped the Blue Streaks' cause as he took first place in the 100-yard Breastroke with an impressive time of 1:05.24. Sophomore Michael Ian Goggins (2nd place, 1:06.36) and sophomore Kyle Mazurek (3rd place, 1:16.81) finished just behind Crncek to conclude a strong showing for JCU.

In the 200-yard Freestyle Relay, the Blue Streaks were again able to pick up their final first place finish of the day. Seniors Drew Edson and James McElroy teamed with Olexa and Holvey to secure a first place finish with a time of 1:32.05.
