It was fairly well acknowledged, even as far back as the Ohio Athletic Conference Media Day in August, that the John Carroll football team had arguably the toughest stretch of games to close out a season across the league.

That may now include the country.

A week nine date at #18 ranked Heidelberg -- whose only loss this season is to the #1 ranked team (and John Carroll's week ten opponent) -- ended with the Blue Streaks falling by a 31-10 score.

John Carroll scored first in this contest, and became the first team to score against Heidelberg in the first quarter all season, when Bradley Marchese nailed a 46-yard field goal. It was the longest successful field goal attempt by a Blue Streak since David Vitatoe split the uprights from 47 yards against Muskingum on October 24, 1998.

From thereafter, however, it would be a great day for the Student Princes.

On a day when the program celebrated its 1000th football game, and the 1972 small college national champions were honored on the 40th anniversary of their feat, the 2012 Heidelberg football team showed why it may be headed back to the postseason. A pair of second quarter touchdowns -- one a reception by C.J. powell and the other a run by Cartel Brooks, put the home team ahead 14-3 at the break.

Two more touchdowns in the third quarter built the Heidelberg lead to 28-3.

John Carroll scored late in the third quarter on an Alex Kline five-yard touchdown catch from Mark Myers to cap a 12-play, 53-yard drive to cut the lead to 28-10.

The Blue Streaks appeared to have seized momentum when Paul Okeyo intercepted a pass in Heidelberg territory early in the fourth quarter, but JCU would turn the ball over on downs and would not score again.

Heidelberg (8-1, 7-1) gained 456 yards of total offense against the Blue Streaks, the most they have given up this year. Brooks, who began the day as the leading rusher in the OAC, finished the day with 134 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries.

John Carroll (6-3, 5-3 OAC), which had its five-game winning streak snapped with the loss, was paced by Myers, who was 23-48 for 228 yards. He had one touchdown and two interceptions. Aramis Greenwodd had a team-high eight receptions for 80 yards, while Lane Robilotto had 35 yards on three catches.

With his first catch of 14 yards, Robilotto became just the second Blue Streak in school history with over 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. Now at 1,033, Robilotto joins John Clark, who had had 1,045 receiving yards in 2001, as the only members of that exclusive club at John Carroll.

Okeyo had a career-high 17 tackles to go along with his interception, while D. J. Debick had his second interception in as many games to set up Marchese's first quarter field goal.
