In the two-day Golden Flash Gala hosted by Kent State University, the John Carroll University women's track team looked to record stellar marks and times going into winter break.

For the Blue Streak women, however, this early-season meet would be an historic one, as two school records were broken.

Complete Results

Freshman Emily Jenkins grabbed a school record in her first opportunity as a Blue Streak, running 8.29 in the 60-meter dash.

Sophomore Megan Martinko hurdled her way to a best-ever 9.89 in the 60-meter hurdles, placing third in her heat. Martinko's time also gives her the school's best-ever showing at the event.

The women's team had two freshmen compete on day one: Jenna Crabtree in the pole vault and Hanna Suttles in the long jump. The two field event athletes made their collegiate debuts with marks of 2.75 meters and 4.49 meters, respectively. Suttles would come back Saturday to jump 9.61 meters in the triple jump.

Saturday kicked off with the shot put, as sophomore Mary Skiffey threw 9.45 meters and Morgan Deuel threw 8.71 meters. Skiffey showed the benefits of her conditioning with her second-farthest throw of her indoor career.

Martinko would later run 45.1 seconds for the 300 meter dash, winning her heat, while sophomore Jenna Elswick would run 48.76 in the same event.

Head coach Dara Ford had nothing but positive things to say about her women's squad, as they showed up to compete in the sprints and field events.

“Nearly everybody who competed for the women qualified for OAC's today,” Ford commented following the meet. “There were good performances out of the jumps, and a great race by Martinko in the hurdles. I saw some strong showings from the freshmen, and I think it bodes well going into the season.”

The Blue Streaks will look to set many more records in 2013, and will open up the year at the SPIRE North Coast Open, held in Geneva, Ohio on January 19.
