As tennis duels go, this one had an odd result. Literally.

John Carroll won all the odd numbered singles matches, while Mount Union won all the even numbered ones. In doubles action, it was the exact opposite, as Mount Union would capture the #1 and #3 flights while the Blue Streaks won the #2 match.

That would be enough for the host Purple Raiders to pull off the 5-4 victory Tuesday in an Ohio Athletic Conference battled staged at the Peterson Fieldhouse in Alliance, Ohio.

JCU fell behind 2-1 after doubles play, with the lone win coming in second doubles. Michael Hulseman and Peter Scanniello defeated Ben Swope and Patrick Yackmack, 8-5. The other doubles matches were also close, including the #3 bout that was settled in a tiebreaker.

In singles play, Ryan Mullaney won in straight sets at #1, Hulseman won by a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 count at #3, and Eric Grimaldi swept his #5 match.

Mount Union won two crucial matches, as Nick Fockler outlasted Sean Graham at #2 in three sets, while Jeff Looker won two tiebreakers at #6 singles over Cass Stadnik.
