Scafe, who has spent 15 years as an active member of the GCFCA, will receive that organization's Golden Deeds Award
Regis Scafe has been a fixture at John Carroll University for over two decades. For the last 13 years, he has guided the Blue Streak football program to 82 victories en route to becoming the longest-tenured coach in program history.
But Scafe has also been an active member of the community, spending 15 years as a member of the Greater Cleveland Football Coaches Association. On April 23, Scafe was honored for his commitment to the organization.
Scafe is the 2012 recipient of the Golden Deeds Award, the GCFCA's highest honor saluting people who make outstanding contributions to high school football in Greater Cleveland. He joins a long
list of highly recognizable names in the football community, including two that mean something special to the leader of the Blue Streak program.
"I'm truly honored to be recognized by the Greater Cleveland Football Coaches Association," said Scafe. "I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them before I joined the John Carroll staff. I think the coolest part for me about winning the award is that my former high school coach (Bill Gutbrod, 1993) and college coach (Flory Mauriocourt, 1991) both received the Golden Deeds Award as well, so I really feel that I have followed in the footsteps of my former coaches."
Scafe began his coaching career at St. Peter Chanel High School in Bedford, Ohio, where he joined the Chanel staff as assistant football and wrestling coach. Scafe became Chanel's head football coach, where he stayed for nine years. His most memorable season was in 1982, when the team had an 8-2 record earning him Co-Coach of the Year accolades in the North Coast Conference.
In 17 seasons as a collegiate head coach (five at Case Western Reserve University, 13 at John Carroll), Scafe has compiled a career coaching record of 98-88. His most memorable season in the collegiate ranks came in 2002 when he led the Blue Streaks to a program-record 12 wins and a NCAA Final Four appearance courtesy of the East Region Championship.
The Golden Deeds Award was given to Scafe at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Independence. The GCFCA also honored Fox 8 Friday Night Touchdown. The GCFCA Coach of the Year was Chuck Kyle of Saint Ignatius High School and his Defensive Coordinator, Dan Corrigan, was named Assistant Coach of the Year.
