Chance To Sweep Falls One Run Short As Softball Streaks Split With Crosstown Rivals

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 John Carroll nearly had the sweep, which nearly clinched a fifth consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference playoff berth. But a split by the Blue Streaks against crosstown and league rival Baldwin-Wallace College in their final regular season road kept them in control of their destiny.

On Wednesday in Berea, JCU won game one by a 5-0 score before falling in game two, 9-8.

Behind a shutout performance by senior Brittant Danilov, John Carroll scored three times in the fourth and twice in the fifth to win its 25th game of the year. The big blow was a two-run home run by Ollie Mathews in the fourth.

Danilov allowed four hits and struck out ten while walking one to improve to 17-5 on the year.

The Streaks fell behind early in game two and essentially chased the host Yellow Jackets for the entirety of the contest. Trailing 4-0 after the first inning, the Streaks rallied to tie the game at 5-5 in the top third. Baldwin-Wallace answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame, and held off the Streaks late.

Mathews drew John Carroll to within 9-8 with two outs when she launched a two-run home runin the top of the seventh, but the Streaks could not plate the tying run.

John Carroll is now 25-13 overall and 10-6 (2nd place) in the OAC. Baldwin-Wallace moves to 18-18 overall and 6-10 in league play.
