Defense Clamps Down on Case Western Reserve As Blue Streaks Edge Spartans, 1-0

Carl Contrascier did his part to help JCU earn a shut-out win against the Spartans
Box Score Thanks to solid defense and several dazzling saves from goalkeeper Carl Contrascier, one goal was all John Carroll would need to edge Case Western Reserve, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium.

After losing a 4-0 decision to the Spartans last season, the Blue Streaks took an aggressive approach from the opening minutes, outshooting Case 8-2 before intermission.

Though JCU had its share of near-misses, senior Ion Coada headed in a corner kick from freshman Shaq Bridges to put the home team on the board in the 44th minute.

The second half was back and forth with Case attempting more shots (6-4), but the Blue Streak defense thwarted a number of Spartan scoring attempts.

With less than 15 minutes to play, Case's Chris Cvecko took a shot from inside the box that appeared to be headed for the back of the net, until Contrascier dove to his left and made a spectacular save to preserve the lead.

The game's final seconds were tense, as well, as the Spartans had a shot saved and were called for a hand ball inside the box, ending their rally and the contest.

John Carroll improves to 1-1 on the season, while Case Western Reserve loses their first game, dropping to 1-1.
