Greg Roman (right), offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, hopes to become the first John Carroll alum to be part of a Super Bowl victory since 2007
John Carroll University will have a graduate on both sidelines when the San Francisco 49ers face the Baltimore Ravens in
Super Bowl XLVII on February 3, 2013, at the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Representing the National Football Conference, the 49ers have former Blue Streak all-conference football player Greg Roman (class of 1995) on its coaching staff. Roman is in his second year as the offensive coordinator in San Francisco, and in both years, the 49ers reached the NFC championship game. This time, San Francisco advanced to the Super Bowl by virtue of a 28-24 win over the Atlanta Falcons.
A three-year letter-winner and two-year starting defensive lineman at John Carroll University from 1990-1994, Roman earned All-Ohio Conference honorable mention honors following his senior season. He also helped the Blue Streaks capture a share of the OAC championship in 1994.
During his junior year at John Carroll, Roman helped launch Project H.O.P.E. (Helping Others Through Physical Education) which aids the developmentally disabled in northeast Ohio. Project H.O.P.E. is still an annual event held at JCU.
On the opposite sideline is Pat Moriarty of the Baltimore Ravens. The team's Vice President for Football Administration first earned a bachelor's degree in industrial management from Georgia Tech, where he was a three-year starter as a running back. He then earned his master's degree in business administration from John Carroll University in 1993.
A graduate of Cleveland's Benedictine High, he first joined the NFL as the Cleveland Browns' Director of Business Operations in 1994.
John Carroll's last tie tio a Super Bowl champion was back on February 4, 2007, in Super Bowl XLI, when Chris Polian, Tom Telesco and David Caldwell were all part of the Indianapolis Colts front office. The Colts defeated the Chicago Beras that year, 29-17.
