Box Score The JCU men's basketball team traveled to Alliance, Ohio this evening in attempt to break out of a three-way tie for fourth place in the OAC with a victory over the University of Mount Union. And though they broke the tie, the Blue Streaks will move in the wrong direction in the league after an 83-74 defeat to the Purple Raiders.
John Carroll entered tonight's game with a winning percentage of .500 both in conference and overall (8-8, 5-5 OAC). Mount Union also held a league record of 5-5 and an overall 7-10 mark. With the loss, the Streaks drop to sixth place in the conference.
The Blue & Gold started strong both offensively and defensively, able to score 13 unanswered points through the first seven minutes of the game. Mount Union found a spark in Taylor Moore and Kyle Scelza, who came alive from 3-point range. They combined to make five long distance connections on the night.
Despite holding the lead for much of the first half, John Carroll wasn't able to fend off the impressive charge of the Purple Raiders. The halftime score ended up 40-38 in favor of Mount Union.
Leading scorers for John Carroll were
Kyle Hubbard with 21 points and
Danny Wallack contributing 17 of his own. Mount Union was led by Nate Jacubec, who scored 18 points on 5-of-10 from 3-point land, and Taylor Moore with 18.
Mount Union started the second half on fire from behind the arc and continued that success for the duration of the game. The Purple Raiders pulled ahead by as many as 15 points with nine minutes left in the contest.
The Blue Streaks were able to bring it back to within five points in the final five minutes, but a second comeback win in a row was not to be.
