Spotlights were on the John Carroll men's basketball team during their first and only televised game of the season.
The young Blue Streaks decided they wanted just a little extra time on the air.
Kyle Hubbard led the Blue Streaks with 22 points and 15 rebounds as John Carroll came back from as many as 13 down Wednesday night to defeat the Heidelberg Student Princes, 71-68, in overtime.
It was the second consecutive home game that the Blue Streaks rallied from a double-digit deficit to win.
Things were ugly for both teams early, but the Student Princes were able to jump out to an early eight point lead with 12:56 left in the first half. John Carroll attempted to rally, but highlight reel dunks and defense from Nate Davis propelled Heidelberg to a 37-26 halftime lead.
Davis would finish with 25 points and 23 rebounds, including four dunks that led head coach Mike Moran to say that Davis would be “adding to his highlight tape after the game.”
Six early points from Hubbard helped the Blue Streaks cut into the deficit, but they were unable to regain the lead for much of the second half.
David Hendrickson came off the bench after three first-half minutes and scored 13 points down the stretch to lead the John Carroll comeback.
The Blue Streaks took their first lead off a steal and fast break layup from Hendrickson with 2:27 left. Hendrickson's play came at a good time, as Hubbard left the game with what he called “severe calf cramps.”
“I got looked at on the sideline and just ran back out,” Hubbard said. “I knew that I needed to be on the floor.”
Hendrickson made one last dramatic shot in the second half, pushing Dane Givner to the floor and hitting a step-back 3-pointer to give the Blue Streaks a 64-62 lead. Givner's jumper 20 seconds later and missed shot by Hubbard sent the game to overtime.
Heidelberg appeared to have the game in hand, when an ill-advised 3-pointer by Ishaam Smith, Jr. gave the Blue Streaks new life. With most of the shot clock remaining and a four-point lead, Smith's miss led to a 7-0 run to close out the game including a three-point play and clutch free throws by
Kenny Janz.
That shot, coupled with Davis spending the rest of overtime on the bench due to fouling out, spelled Heidelberg's end. A desperation play in the final seconds fell short and gave the Blue Streaks their third straight home win.
Ryan Angers reflected on the young team's ability to come back in consecutive home games.
“It's simple--get the job done,” said Angers. “It wasn't pretty, but we played without negativity when we were down and picked each other up.”
Moran was also happy with the way the game plan worked out.
“Fatigue sets in when you use everyone,” Moran said. “Nate [Davis] got in foul trouble when we made him log minutes against fresh legs.”
“This was a cross country race to the finish, not a sprint.”
Hubbard best summed up the team's mentality after the game.
“We've become a unit at the right time,” remarked Hubbard. “Right before the OAC Tournament starts.”
With the loss, Heidelberg falls to 9-10 and 4-9 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. John Carroll improves to 10-9 and 7-6 in the OAC. The team travels Saturday afternoon to conference-leading Capital in Bexley at 3:00 p.m.
