But on those rare occasion where such a phrase actually proves applicable, those three words can sound like poetry. By the final score of 26-24, 25-14, 23-25, 25-21, the John Carroll volleyball team defeated the host Marietta College Pioneers Friday night and improved to 14-7 overall and 2-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference
John Carroll's four-set victory at Marietta -- which marks the Blue Streaks first league win in an enemy gym since October 9, 2010 -- was the result of contributions from a variety of players.
Kills? Six Blue Streaks had at least six putaways.
Digs? Five members of the blue and gold had at least a dozen.
Blocks? Seven different John Carroll players had a hand in at least one.
It also required a "dig deep" mentality on several occasions.
Buoyed by a Homecoming weekend crowd, Marietta started off fast in the opening set. At oen point, the host squad led by a 20-13 score.
But the resilient Blue Streaks would find a way back, scoring 13 of the next 17 points to pull off the improbable rally. Two aces by
Katie Cosker were a big part of the comeback.
Teresa Noewer tied the set at 24-24 with a kill, and that the Pioneers tossed in a pair of errors to hand the Streaks the game one win.
It was all JCU in game two. The Blue Streaks stormed out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back. A pair of aces and a pair of kills in the opening seven points by
Sarah Orlandi set the tone.
John Carroll had early control of game three, and led 9-4, but an 8-0 run midway through the set by the Pioneers breathed life into the hosts and the hoem crowd. Although JCU tied the score at 21-21, Marietta staved off a sweep and won by two points.
Feeding off their new found energy, the Pioneers fought their way to an 11-8 lead. JCU answered by scoring five of the next six points for a 13-12 advantage.
After the set was tied at 15-15, John Carroll made a run that Marietta could not answer. An ace by Cosker followed by a pair of Maddie McDowell kills sent the Blue Streaks toward the finish line, and
Leah Switalski's 11th and final kill sealed the victory.
Switalski (11) and Noewer (10) led the offense with a combined 21 kills, while Orlandi (4) and Cosker (3) combined for seven of the Blue Streaks' nine aces. Sara Kamisnki led all JCU players with 28 digs, while Kit O'Shaugnessy had 23 digs and a team-high 37 assists.
