Kay Akerly had a hand in five of John Carroll's seven goals.
Box Score Saying that the Blue Streaks had an impressive offensive performance would be an understatement. The John Carroll University women's soccer team came into the match with a sub .500 record and a mere one goal scored in the last three games.
Â
Backed by five first half goals the Blue Streaks rolled to a 7-0 win over Marietta College on Saturday afternoon inside Don Shula Stadium to improve to 4-6-3 and pick up their first OAC win.
It was bound to be an emotional day with the return of long-time head coach Tracy Blasius, who spent 15 years on the sidelines for the Blue Streaks from 1997-2012. After a year away from coaching, Blasius picked up the whistle once more and is in her first season as head coach at Marietta.
Â
The Blue Streaks fired their first shot on goal just eight seconds into the match. This shot would foreshadow the offensive dominance shown by the Blue Streaks throughout the game.
Â
John Carroll's first goal was scored by
Kristen Profeta when she headed the ball from a perfectly placed cross from a free kick in the right wing. This goal started a chain reaction of scores.
Â
Kay Akerly directed the offense at will finishing with two goals and three assists. The first of Akerly's scores came off of a rocket into the upper corner of the goal. She scored her other goal from a failed clear by the Pioneers as she again set a rocket into the goal.
Â
Genny Goergen had two goals as well in the offensive onslaught with one of them coming from a well-place low cross from Akerly.
Â
The impressive goal-scoring event was a complete turnaround from the games played this season. Coming into the game, the Blue Streaks had not score more than two goals in a game and only had nine goals for the season. The offense was a big emphasis in practice this week.
Â
"We really focused on finishing our opportunities for goals," said head coach
Michael Marich. "We have had many attempts but could never finish."
Â
John Carroll enjoyed a 20-9 advantage in shots and a 5-0 edge on corner kicks. Junior
Haley McDonald collected four saves to pick up her first shutout of the season.
Â
John Carroll remains home to take on Mount Union at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
