Box Score Faced with a tough closing stretch to cap the regular season, the John Carroll University volleyball team was in search of a momentum booster as it prepares to enter the OAC Tournament next week.
The Blue Streaks responded with a 25-13, 25-12, 25-16 win over host Wilmington College on Saturday morning to improve to 19-10, 5-4 OAC.
JCU came out firing on all cylinders opening with a 5-0 run. The Blue Streaks added a second 5-0 run and a 7-0 run later in the set to cruise to a 25-13 win. Freshman setter
Kit O'Shaughnessy nearly had a double-double in the set alone finishing with 10 digs and nine assists.
The Blue Streaks kept up the intense pressure in the second set as the hitters heated up to .400 hitting for the stanza.
Alexa Webber and
Leah Switalski led the charge in the set combining for nine kills with
Sara Kaminski serving up two aces.
Wilmington fought hard to will its way back into the match to start the third set. With the score tied at six, the Blue Streaks dug in. Maddie McDowell notched back-to-back blocks to spark the momentum back towards JCU. Two kills by
Teresa Noewer and Webber opened up an 8-point cushion from which the Blue Streaks never looked back.
O'Shaughnessy notched her 15th double-double of the season leading the team with a match-high 20 digs and adding 32 assists. Switalski led the attack with 11 kills while hitting .308 for the match. Kaminski (19) and Noewer (10) added double-digit dig performances on the morning. As a team Blue Streaks out-hit the Fightin' Quakers .240 to -.028.
John Carroll will square off against Otterbein in the quarterfinals of the OAC Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The final details of the match will be posted on jcusports.com when they become official. The Blue Streaks, making their first postseason appearance since 2010 enter the field as the No. 5 overall seed.
