Danny Wallack buried three of the Blue Streaks' six first half 3-pointers.
Box Score Sticking to a balanced game plan proved to provide dividends for the John Carroll University men's basketball team as the Blue Streaks jumped out to its first 3-0 start since 2010.
John Carroll downed Johnson & Wales University (1-2) 87-74 in the Buffalo State Coles Classic on Friday evening.
With a deep lineup, the Blue Streaks featured six players in double figures in scoring. The depth proved to be unmatched as JCU's reserves out-scored Johnson & Wales' 36-7 with three individual Blue Streak players outscoring the entire Wildcat bench.
David Hendrickson led the offensive charge and had the steady hand at the free throw line. The junior scored a team-high 19 points finishing 10-of-11 at the free throw line.
Joining Hendrickson in double figures were
Jake Hollinger (14),
Danny Wallack (13),
Doug Caputo (11),
Simon Kucharewicz (10) and
David Linane (10).
Linane ran the offense distributing a game high seven assists, one fewer than the Wildcats had as a team.
"When David gets it going he really can spark some runs," said head coach Mike Moran. "His ability to pass the ball and find teammates is huge for us."
The Blue Streaks, who led by as many as 18 points, maintained a double-digit margin for most of the second half only seeing its lead cut to single figures twice.
JCU's sharpshooters were on front the start burying seven 3-pointers for the game including three by Wallack in the first half.
The Blue Streaks countered with a 10-1 lead after a Quarry Greenaway layup cut JCU's lead to nine with 14:17 remaining in the game to push JCU's lead to 18.
John Carroll outshot Johnson & Wales .448 to .413 and also capitalized on a sub-par .545 free throw percentage by the Wildcats.
John Carroll takes on host Buffalo State at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
