It was a day where the winning streak reached ten for the John Carroll softball team, but it was also a day where the streak stopped at ten.
The Blue Streaks needed some time to shake off its weather induced hiatus, leaving a host of runners on base Thursday at Denison University, but the Blue Streaks picked up crucial runs in game one to take down the Big Red, 2-1. In the day's second contest, JCU rallied late to tie the game, but ultimately suffered a 6-5 loss.
A pitcher's duel broke out in game one, as JCU's
Rachel Byrnes and Denison's Rebecca Dyer took to a 1-1 tie into the fifth inning. After surrenduring a run in the bottom of the first inning, Byrnes buckled down to hold the Big Red scoreless for the remainder of the game to pick up her sixth win of the season with the masterful performance.
It took until the fourth inning for the Blue Streaks to get on the scoreboard.
Morgan Robinson led off the frame with a triple, then came home on
Lia Locey's sacrifice fly.
The winning run was plated in the top of the sixth, when
Samantha Becker singled through the left side to score Christie Wade.
In the nightcap, Denison raced out to a 5-0 lead through five innings, but the Blue Streaks proved resilient.
Michaela Mackey drove in a pair of runs with a single, then
Mackenzie Griffin -- who went hitless in the opener to end an 11-game hitting streak -- completed a 4-4 effort in game two by driving home a run to make the score 5-3.
Ally Kleinhans followed with an RBI single to score Mackey, then Robinson reached on a two-out error that enabled Griffin to score the tying run.
Despite giving up the five-run lead, Denison scored in the bottom of the sixth for what proved to be the winning tally. JCU advanced a runner to third in the top of the seventh but could not get the equalizer.
John Carroll is now 10-4 overall while Denison stands with a record of 8-4
