All the numbers pointed to a big day for John Carroll softball.
Outscoring the opposition 21-2. Outhitting the opposition 27-7. A possible school record (awaiting further research) for RBI in a single game.
It all started with a nine run first inning. John Carroll used that early explosion to defeat Misericordia, 13-0, in five innings and then rolled past Elizabethtown, 8-2.
Mackenzie Grriffin lambasted Misericordia pitching to the tune of six RBI. It is the highest single game total of the past decade, and could prove to be a school record. She doubled home a run in her first at bat of the opening inning to give JCU a 1-0 advantage, then pushed across three more with her second.
Ally Kleinhans,
Morgan Robinson and
Erica Chiudioni also had RBI hits in the nine-run first.
Angelia Locey and
Samantha Becker each scored three runs in support of
Rachel Byrnes, who pitched a four-hit shutout. She struck out nine and walked none to improve to 2-1 on the year.
In the match-up with Elizabethtown, the Blue Streaks steadily pulled away. Leading by just a run at 2-1 in the bottom of the third, JCU scored once in the third, twice in the fourth and three times in the sixth to deliver
Trisha Pike her first win of the year. The junior allowed just three hits and two unearned runs in seven innings.
Griffin continued to swing a hot bat as she and Kleinhans each accounted for three RBI.
John Carroll is now 3-3 on the year with four games remaining in Florida.
