Byrnes No-Hitter And Late Heroics In Game Two Bookend A JCU Softball Sweep Of Ursuline

Trisha Pike was solid in relief as the Blue Streaks rallied for a sweep against Ursuline
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Rachel Byrnes provided one bookend of the sweep with her first career no hitter, and several big plays in the late innings of game two provided the other as the John Carroll softball team pulled off a sweep of Ursuline College Monday afternoon in University Heights.

Byrnes was impressive in dealing with the Arrows' line-up, allowing no runs and no hits while walking just three and striking out eight. She improved to 13-1 on the year.

JCU scored all the runs it would need in the second as four tallies went up on the scoreboard thanks to RBI hits by Michaela Mackey, Erica Chiudioni, and Mackenzie Griffin.

Morgan Robinson added an insurance run when she drove home Nicki Fluharty in the fifth.

It would not be the last time this combo would be heard from.

In the second game, JCU led early on by a 1-0 count, but the Arrows would score three runs off starter Gina Tosti in the fifth inning, and one more in the top of the sixth off releiver Trisha Pike to take a 4-1 lead.

The John Carroll offense came to life in the sixth. With bases loaded and one out, the Blue Streaks got a big lift from Lia Locey, who drove home two runs with a double to deep center, and a third came across thanks to an error in the outfield that knotted the score at 4-4.

Pike worked a quick 1-2-3 top of the seventh to set up a dramatic finish.

With runners on first and second and one out, Robinson ripped a shot to left field. As pinch runner Fluharty rounded third, the left fielder was unable to pick the ball up cleanly, allowing the winning run to cross home plate without a throw.

John Carroll is now 18-8, while Ursuline fell to 7-17.
