The JCU women's tennis team hung tough with a hot Ohio Athletic Conference opponent, but the Blue Streaks fell short in several close sets to drop the match, 6-3, to the University of Mount Union in Alliance on Tuesday.
Catherine Engel and
Kyle Cousineau combined for the Streaks' only doubles victory (8-4), while the #2 and #3 doubles squads battled to tight losses.
After dropping the first two singles bouts, John Carroll's
Tracy Gibson scored a 6-2, 6-4 win at #3 singles to give the Blue & Gold life. Then,
Erin Davies (#4 singles) kept alive hope for a team triumph with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback victory against Mount's Taylor Dowling.
With the team match hanging in the balance, however, the Purple Raiders claimed wins at #5 and #6 singles to close out the afternoon and account for the final score.
After the loss, the Blue Streaks drop to 3-7 overall, 2-2 in OAC play, but will earn a forfeit victory against Wilmington College on Friday to move back above .500 in the league.
