Sarah Ruckstuhl and the Blue Streaks handed the Terriers their first loss of the season.
Box Score The John Carroll University women's soccer team has found its formula to winning, score quickly and play solid defense.
After a pair of 1-0 wins, the Blue Streaks picked up their third straight win with a 2-1 triumph over the visiting Terriers of Hiram College on Tuesday night inside Don Shula Stadium. John Carroll evened its record at 3-3-1 while Hiram was handed its first loss falling to 5-1.
"Obviously for the girls it's some momentum going forward," said second-year head coach
Michael Marich. "We worked some things out after the first couple of games of the year. Hopefully we can continue that momentum. Again, a lot of things they've been working at practice and then doing in the games and we've got to keep doing that."
Genny Goergen finished a feed from
Kay Akerly on a cross after a foul to put the Blue Streaks on the board early for the third straight game.
Danielle Sharbaugh netted the game-winner in the 51st minute off of
Preston Mendel's assist for her second goal of the season.
The Blue Streaks, in search of their first three shutout streak since the 2011 season, appeared to have the game in hand but Hiram's Alison Cowell's no-angle goal put the Terriers on the board sliding a shot past a diving
Nicole Grys in the 85th minute.
However, Grys has been solid at goalkeeper for the Blue Streaks. The senior posted seven saves to pick up her third straight win for John Carroll.
"She's done great making the change and stepping in," said Marich. "She's been training really hard and been solid for us. Tonight she gave up her first goal in the last three games. She's something you're really looking for, a solid contributor back there. Hopefully we continue to feed off of her energy."
John Carroll applied immediate offensive pressure to start the game as Akerly nearly scored in the third minute of the game from about 20 yards out with the shot just glancing off the fingertips of Hiram goalkeeper Kailie Reed.
At the end of the game the Akerly-led defense warded off the Terriers to preserve the victory drawing praise from Marich.
Said Marich, "Again, we made some adjustments after the first couple of games and have been working on it at practice. In the center, Kay's been doing great for us and as an anchor back there she's been playing on the outside. She's been keeping everyone together. With the fight and competiveness that the kids have had over the last three games, we've seen them win by one goal each game, it's a lot to them and how they've been defending."
The women's soccer team begins a five-game road stretch with a 1 p.m. contest at Grove City College on Saturday, Sept. 21.
