John Carroll won at Baldwin Wallace for the first time since 2001.
Box Score The last time the John Carroll University football team went into Baldwin Wallace University and came away was a victory was 2001.
Tom Arth was the quarterback.
Now the head coach at his alma-mater, Arth and the Blue Streaks dominated in every aspect to take a 27-7 win and send the coveted Gold Bowl trophy back to University Heights for the first time since 2010.
"I was really proud of the way our team prepared and executed the game plan," said Arth. "Our answer after Baldwin Wallace scored their touchdown was huge. It was a great testament to how focused our kids are and it's great for our team moving forward."
The win over the 23rd-ranked Yellow Jackets was John Carroll's first win over a ranked opponent since 2008 when the Blue Streaks knocked off then-No. 9 Capital. John Carroll improves to 2-0, 1-0 OAC for the first time
Looking to get the running game going after stalling in most of its season-opener,
DaQuan Grobsmith responded with 29 carriers for 115 yards - his third 100-yard game against the Yellow Jackets.
After a slow first quarter the lights-out Blue Streak offense exploded for 17 second quarter points.
Pinned deep in its own end on their own 4-yard line the Blue Streaks materialized a 12-play 96-yard drive for the game's first score. Senior
Alex Kline capped the drive by keeping both feet in bounds on a 12-yard loft from
Mark Myers.
Two drives later, Grobsmith nearly plunged in from 12 yards out knifing through the Baldwin Wallace defense but was ruled down inside the 1-yard line. Three plays later
Randy Greenwood made a rare offensive appearance and snuck in from two yards out.
John Carroll stayed hungry with
Mitch Krotz forcing the Kevin Johnson fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Kresmir Ivkovic turned the costly turnover into points with a 45-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.
Despite both teams combining for over 1,100 yards of total offense in their respective first contests it was the defenses, particularly John Carroll's who owned the first quarter keeping both teams off of the scoreboard.
The John Carroll defense made sure the No. 3 offense in the OAC did not get going until midway through the third quarter.
Ryan Winchell intercepted Michael Slack's first second half pass attempt to give the Blue Streaks the ball on the Baldwin Wallace 19-yard line. The interception, which was the first in Winchell's career, sent the Yellow Jackets' starter to the sideline with zero passing yards.
Brody Zangaro added two fourth quarter interceptions to put the icing on the cake.
The Blue Streaks held the Yellow Jackets to 23 yards of total offense in the first quarter with all of them coming on the ground. Baldwin Wallace featured the No. 1 rushing offense in the OAC coming into play.
Not to be outdone, the defense continued its stellar play by only allowing 16 yards in the second quarter.
Backup quarterback Kyle Ohradzansky found Kyle Dunne from nine yards out with just under nine minutes remaining in the third quarter to put the Yellow Jackets on the board. It was also BW's first pass completion of the contest.
Grobsmith responded with a 6-yard touchdown run to put the game seemingly out of reach on the first play of the fourth quarter.
For the game the Yellow Jackets were held to 183 total yards including only 49 through the air.
The John Carroll receivers posed match-up issues all game long for the Baldwin Wallace secondary with
Marshall Howell recording over 100 yards receiving for the second straight game.
Aramis Greenwood added seven receptions for 80 yards. The offense also controlled the tempo of the game holding the ball for 35 minutes.
Krotz led the defense with 15 tackles including 3.5 for loss. For his effort he was named John Carroll's Lee Tressel Shriner Classic Player of the Game.
John Carroll will make its home debut against Otterbein on Saturday, Sept. 28 with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
