Katherine Devine started off her collegiate career with a win and Tracy Gibson, the team's leader in wins last season, picked up right where she left off but the John Carroll University women's tennis team fell to host Allegheny College 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon in Meadville, Pa.

Gibson cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles over Haley Meekhof to extend her singles win streak to six straight matches dating back to the spring.

"Tracy has had a few nagging injuries and illnesses since her freshman year and it is great to see her finally healthy and playing at the level we know she can," said head coach Shaun Keenan. "I think Tracy will get stronger and more confident as the year goes on."

Devine, a Massillon, Ohio product, recovered after dropping the second set to take a 6-2, 5-7, 10-6 win over Sloane Prince in the second spot.

"Katherine pulled out a tight match and played her best tennis in the deciding tie breaker," said Keenan. "She showed a lot of maturity and poise for her first college match . Katherine is going to have a great future with JCU and we are excited to see her develop."

The Gators clamped down to take the other seven points on Tuesday to secure the win.

Hannah Baumwell fought hard in the first set before falling 6-4, 6-0 to Mikaela Pope at No. 6 singles. The Gators' Andrea Bush defeated Anna Stein 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot. Catherine Engel fell 6-0, 6-2 to Tiffany Kollah at No. 1 while Kyle Cousineau dropped a 6-2, 6-1 match to Laura Steele.

The Blue Streaks fought hard in doubles play but were unable to secure a point.

Baumwell and Devine dropped a 9-8 (7-3) tiebreaker to Meekhof and Pope in the No. 3 position. Cousineau and Engel fought hard in the first-seeded spot but were defeated by Brush and Prince 8-6. Gibson and Stein fell 8-3 to Kollah and Steele in the No. 2 position.

The Blue Streaks face a quick turnaround with an 11 a.m. tilt at Franciscan University on Saturday, Sept. 28.
