Record Numbers Produce Historic Win As JCU Football Opens Season With A Shutout

Marshall Howell caught a touchdown pass and had 147 yards receiving in his collegiate debut
Box Score In the lobby of the team hotel before his first game as head coach, Tom Arth was a picture of calm, cool and collected as he greeted alumni and families of his football team.

Whatever he was feeling on the inside may only be known to him. But maybe his outward appearance was boosted by confidence in his players.

Sparked by a record-setting performance by his quarterback and a shutout effort by his defense, John Carroll rolled to a 41-0 victory over St. Norbert College Saturday at Toyota Park in Chicago, Illinois.

Mark Myers was 26-41 for 526 yards and four touchdown as his passing total eclipsed his school record single game total of 474 yards set against Muskingum on October 13, 2012.

Just as spectacular was a defensive effort that limited the Green Knights to 114 yards on 51 plays and allowed just one of 14 third downs to be converted. JCU outgained St. Norbert by a whopping 664-144 margin.

The Blue Streaks hit big plays throughout the afternoon. Their first score was a 57-yard hook up from Myers to freshman Marshall Howell with 12:52 to play in the opening quarter on a fourth and one play.

Aramis Greenwood caught the first of his two touchdowns with 28 ticks left in the opening quarter, turning a moderate length pass and turning it into a 49-yard scoring romp.

The scoring in the second quarter came off the foot of Kresimir Ivkovic. After missing a 51-yard field goal wide left in the first quarter, he conected on boots of 21 and 22 yards to stake John Carroll a 20-0 halftime advantage.

The offense stalled for a bit in the third quarter, but on one play, the switched got flipped on again. Jordan D'Orazio was on the receiving end of a 67-yard touchdown pass that capped a 90-yard drive. On the next possession, it took two plays to traverse 78 yards as Myers and Greenwood linked up on a 50-yard touchdown strike.

After Myers was done, Wes Keller put the final points on the board with 12;28 left in the game when he connected with Brian Kornowski from 23 yards out.

Matt Feeney had eight tackles and Mitch Krotz had seven as JCU's defense held St. Norbert to seven completions in the passing game and 49 yards on the ground. The Blue Streaks, in the first game with first-year defensive coordinator Brandon Staley had their first season-opening shutout since a 24-0 win over Wooster in 2007. It was also the first shutout of any kind for John Carroll since October 10, 2009 -- a 22-0 blanking of Marietta.

At the end of the game, Arth was presented a game ball by John Carroll president Fr. Robert Niehoff. Only then did a little hint of what may have been going inside the rookie coach escape.

Hard to blame him.
