In the end, however, the established team found a way to pull out a victory. The College of Wooster played catch up all day, and then came up with the game winning goal in the second overtime to hand John Carroll its first loss, 8-7, Wednesday in Wooster, Ohio.
JCU held leads of 3-1, 4-3, 5-4, 6-5, and 7-6 but surrendered the tying point with 28 seconds left in regulation and then could not come up with the golden goal.
The Blue Streaks had never trailed in a game until Wooster's Nate Weltman scored off a pass from Evan Albertson to stake the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Just 65 seconds later,
Declan O'Grady scored the equalizer. From there, O'Grady and
Keegan Flinter tallied goals to put John Carroll ahead, 3-1.
Weltman then came up with a huge goal, scoring with just three seconds remaining in the opening period.
The Fighting Scots had the lone goal in the second period, leaving the score knotted at 3-3 at the end of the first half.
O'Grady scored his third goal of the game at the 7:18 mark of the third period to give JCU a 4-3 advantage. It was the only goal of the quarter.
In the fourth, play opened up where the two teams traded goals at a rapid pace. After combining for seven goals in the first three quarters, there were seven goals counted in the fourth.
Stephen Leous appeared to have scored a decisive goal with 1:28 to play, putting John Carroll ahead at 7-6, but Wooster had one last answer. After surviving two shots, the Blue Streaks could not stop the third as Jake Bernard's goal with 28 ticks left forced overtime.
Both teams got off one shot in the first overtime but neither found the target. In the second overtime, Wooster had both shots taken, with Pat McKay proving the hero with his goal 41 seconds into the period.
Wooster had 33 shots to JCU's 23, and had a two-to-one edge in ground balls (40-20).
Wooster, which opened the season with a 10-3 win over Mount Union last week, improved to 2-0.
JCU, which got ten saves from
Brian Bedell, fell to 2-1 on the young season.
