OAC Championship Game Preview: Will Seven Be Lucky For JCU Men's Basketball Team

Joey Vuyancih has raised his scoring average nearly five points in the OAC Tournament
If one question could be answered Saturday night in the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament title game, it would be what number carries more good fortune, three or seven.

For the host school, Wilmington is making its third appearance in an OAC Tournament championship game. So is the third time a charm?

For John Carroll, this will be the seventh time playing in the winner-take-all title tilt. So are sevens truly lucky?

All answeres will be revealed Saturday night, March 1, at Fred Raizk Arena in Hermann Court, Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.

Live stats (courtesy of Wilmington College), live audio (provided by WJCU-FM 88.7) and live video (produced by Innerphase Video productions and the OAC) will be provided for the championship final.

Both teams are riding the magic carpet these days. John Caroll as the #5 seed has won three games already in this playoff run. It started Monday with a dispatching of #8 seed Otterbein. The Blue Streaks then hit the road to pick off #4 seed Ohio Northern Tuesday, and then the shocker -- an upset of top-seeded Mount Union in Alliance Thursday.

Wilmington rolled past preseason favorite and #6 seed Baldwin Wallace at home Tuesday before upsetting 2013 OAC Tournamrnt champion Marietta on the road Thursday.

Since neither team was "supposed" to be here based on their seeds, it is clear a charmed life both are leading.

But it has been simply more than fate smiling upon the Quakers and the Blue Streaks. It has been about two teams hitting an ardent stride at the right time, doing what they do best.

When John Carroll (18-10, 9-9 OAC) scores at or above its average of 84 points, it owns a record of 10-3. When held to under 80 points or fewer, JCU is a more pedestrian 4-6. In the OAC Tournament, the Blue Streaks are averaging 90.0 points per game.

Joey Vuyancih had enjoyed a great tournament to date, averaging 15.3 points per game, almost five points per contest better than his season average. Jake Hollinger (11.7 ppg) and David Hendrickson (11.0 ppg) are also averaging in double figures through three tournament games.

As a team, the Blue Streaks are shooting 50 percent (90-180) from the field, and have produced 32 steals (10.7 per game).

Wilmington (18-8, 13-5 OAC) is led by 2014 OAC Player of the Year Malcolm Heard II, who tops the league in both scoring (18.7 points) and rebounds (7.9). R.J. Leppert, a second team selection, is second on the team with 13.8 points and 6.1 rebounds.

The Fightin' Quakers swept the season series from the Blue Streaks, including a 72-66 victory in Wilmington back in January, and a 97-74 win two weeks ago February 16 in University Heights. Wilmington has won four in a row in the series, but JCU holds the all-time edge, 27-14.

In the postseason, JCU also holds a slight edge, 2-1, but the Quakers did win the last OAC playoff match-up -- 79-74 -- in University Heights in 2012. The Blue Streaks were victorious in 2005 and 2007.

The Quakers will be making their third appearance in five years in the OAC Tournament final, but Saturday night's contest will mark the first time Wilmington will host the game .

Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and $2 for non-OAC students. Fans with student ID's from OAC schools receive free admission.
