John Carroll played in its first OAC Championship game since 2011.
Box Score History was not on John Carroll's side on Saturday. The last time a number five seed won the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament in men's basketball was 1979.
In a heart-breaking finish to JCU's magical postseason run, the Blue Streaks fell on the road to the Wilmington Fightin' Quakers, 69-63, in the OAC Championship.
Late turnovers doomed the Blue Streaks. Down by just one point with 33 seconds remaining, a pair of giveaways prevented the Blue and Gold from capturing their first OAC title since 2011.
Fouls also came back to haunt the Blue Streaks. JCU's 26 fouls gave Wilmington 38 chances from the charity stripe. Wilmington hit 30 of those to overcome a poor shooting night at just 28.8 percent.
David Linane led the Blue Streaks with 18 points, but it was Wilmington's Malcolm Heard II who was the hero. The OAC Player of the Year notched a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds. He shot just 3-of-12 from the floor, but knocked down 13-of-16 from the free throw line.
One of Heard's biggest makes came early in the second half. The senior hit a 3-pointer with 16:08 mark to enthuse the home crowd and extend Wilmington's lead to 40-36. But on the ensuing possession,
Will Starks buried a trey in response. Linane then handed the lead back to JCU with a layup with 14:15 left.
Taylor Wellman knocked down a 3-pointer less than a minute later to spark a 9-0 Wilmington run, which granted the Fightin' Quakers a 49-43 lead. JCU head coach Mike Moran called a timeout with 11 minutes left to try to stop the bleeding.
The Blue Streaks battled back and began to get traction on offense. The Fightin' Quakers still held a 54-51 advantage at the halfway point of the second period.
Wallack nailed a 3-pointer from the right win with 8:10 left minutes left to bring JCU within one, 57-54. A few possessions later, JCU finally got back the lead. Linane drove the lane and put up a beautiful layup with 6:26 remaining to give JCU a 58-57 advantage.
A big 3-pointer from Wilmington's R.J. Leppert then gave Wilmington a critical swing of momentum with 3:22 left. His trey gave the Fightin' Quakers the lead that would stand for the next two minutes until Hollinger tied the game at 63 with a free throw with 1:13 left.
The Fightin' Quakers snatched the lead back with 33 seconds left, 64-63, on a Heard free throw. A JCU turnover on the next possession forced the Blue Streaks to foul Leppert, who connected on one of his two free throws. Another JCU turnover with 17 seconds to go forced the Blue Streaks to foul once again. Klarke Ransome hit both, extending Wilmington's lead to 67-63.
But the Blue and Gold couldn't make a shot on their next possession, giving JCU its first loss since last Saturday's defeat to Marietta in the regular season finale.
The first half of the contest was sloppier than the second, featuring 21 fouls between the two teams. Neither team could find a groove on offense early on as a result.
Wilmington grabbed a 5-2 lead early in the contest, as JCU showed some uneasy nerves early on. The Blue Streaks shot just 2-of-9 in the opening five minutes of the contest.
The Blue and Gold began to find a rhythm as the period progressed.
Will Starks hit a 3-pointer with 14:05 to play to complete a 7-2 run allow JCU to retake the lead, 9-7. The trey would be JCU's only of the half, however.
Fouls continued to plague both teams as the halfway point of the first drew near. Wilmington entered the bonus just nine and a half minutes into the game, as JCU was called for seven fouls over that short span.
The Fightin' Quakers managed to build up a 21-13 lead over the next few minutes, as JCU suddenly went cold from the floor.
Simon Kucharewicz ended JCU's scoreless streak at the 7:10 mark.
Nicholas Ruckel followed Kucharewicz by scoring on consecutive possessions, narrowing the deficit to three with 5:22 left. Following a Wilmington timeout, JCU regained the lead, 25-24, with 4:29 remaining.
The teams traded baskets and the lead for the rest of the half. Taylor Wellman drained a 3-pointer at the 1:45 mark to give Wilmington a lead they would hold for the rest of the half. As the teams went into the locker room, the Fightin' Quakers clutched to a narrow 33-30 lead.
Wilmington led at halftime in both of JCU's other losses to the Fightin' Quakers this season.
The Blue Streaks finish the season with a final record of 18-11.
