Box Score 4 A strange final day in Florida for the John Carroll softball team that featured figurative power surges at the plate and actual power outages at the fields of play left the Blue Streaks heading back north with a record of 4-4.
JCU had dropped a pair of games on Tuesday to the College of St. Benedict and Muhlenberg, had a scheduled day off on Wednesday and then were rained out on Thursday. To say the Blue Streaks were itching to get back on the field would be an understatement.
The Blue Streaks rolled early and often against Emerson on Friday afternoon. A four run second inning highlighted by back-to-back home runs from
Samantha Becker and
Colleen Brady stakes John Carroll to a 4-0 lead.
After Emerson put a tally on the board in the top of the third, the Blue Streaks answered with a three-run explosion in the bottom of the frame.
Carly Simecek led off the inning with her first collegiate home run.
John Carroll ended the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, as Brady and Fluharty drove across the finishing tallies.
Rachel Byrnes allowed just one run in improving to 2-2 on the season.
The nightcap against #11 ranked Coe proved to be an adventure. The game took nearly four hours to complete due to a pair of power outages that forced the teams to switch fields twice. When all was said and done, Coe pulled away late for a 7-1 win.
Victoria Eder had the lone RBI for John Carroll with a single in the first inning.
Angie Zappitelli (.417), Eder (.400), Fluharty (.385) and
Ashlee Unrue (.381) were the top hitters on the trip for John Carroll.
Morgan Robinson batted .333 and led the Blue Streaks with nine total hits, while Becker had a team best eight RBI and three doubles. Collectively, JCU had six home runs hit by six different players.
