Samantha Becker had a solid afternoon at the plate against Mount Union, going 4-6 with three runs scored

Box Score 2 In golf terms, the John Carroll softball team would have liked to invoke a "mulligan" after the first inning this afternoon at Mount Union.
It was the only inning all afternoon in which the Blue Streaks allowed any runs, but it was enough to damage any thoughts of a sweep. As it ended up, John Carroll still left Alliance with a well-earned split against Mount Union in Ohio Athletic Conference play Tuesday.
Behind a six-run first inning, Mount Union won game one, 6-3. In the nightcap, JCU slugged out an 11-0 victory in five innings.
A nine-day layoff showed in the first inning of the first game. JCU left the bases loaded at the top of the frame, and Mount Union took advantage of two Blue Streak errors in the bottom half to cross the plate six times on just three hits.
John Carroll scored once in the third, the sixth and the seventh but could not string enough runs together to complete the comeback.
Game two was a different story.
Morgan Robinson and
Colleen Brady had RBI hits in the first inning to put JCU ahead, 2-0. In the fourth, it was
Rebecca Reid and
Samantha Becker who supllied the run scoring hits.
Already up 4-0, John Carroll put the game away in the top of the fifth inning. Robinson singled to lead off, which was followed by
Carly Simecek reaching on a walk. Both came home on a single by
Alyssa Coleman to make the score 6-0.
Ashlee Unrue later doubled home Reid and
Lia Locey to put JCU ahead 8-0.
The capper would be a three-run homer belted by
Gina Tosti , the second of her career, that made the score 11-0.
Rachel Byrnes was impressive after a rough outing in the first game. In five innings, Byrnes allowed just four hits, striking out six and walking just one.
John Carroll is now 8-8 overall and 2-2 in the OAC.
