No Three Run Lead Safe In Berea As JCU And Baldwin Wallace Split Softball Twinbill

Erica Chiudioni went 4-7 against Baldwin Wallace with a triple and two runs
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Turnabout was fair play in Berea Friday afternoon.

After John Carroll overcame a three run deficit in the first game to win, the host Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets did likewise in game two as the two teams split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Cuyahoga Fairgrounds.

In the opener, John Carroll got off to a quick start thanks to a Morgan Robinson home run in the top of the first, but Baldwin Wallace scored once in the bottom of the first and thre more times in the bottom of the second to move ahead, 4-1.

John Carroll used a six-run third to grab the lead back. Robinson and Alyssa Coleman had RBI walks, while Colleen Brady had a sacrifice fly RBI. The big blow came off the bat of Lia Locey, whose two run single put JCU in front, 7-4.

The host squad scored an unearned run in the fifth, and did get two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but Rachel Byrnes got the final out on a swing and a miss to ice the game.

Byrnes struck out a career-high 11 in posting her ninth win of the season. In seven innings, she allowed eight hits, five runs (four earned) and only walked two to go alongside the 11 strikeouts.

John Carroll seemed to ride the momentum of its first game win into the second. Another big third inning seemed to have the Blue Streaks set up for a potential sweep.

Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the third, JCU plated four runs on just two hits. Carly Simecek had the only RBI hit of the inning as he single scored Erica Chiudioni. The other three runs were produced via an error, a wild pitch and a ground out.

The Yellow Jackets tallied a run in the bottom of the fourth with a home run, but a Chiudioni triple scored Samantha Becker to put JCU ahead, 5-2, in the top of the fifth.

Another Baldwin Wallace home run cut John Carroll's lead to 5-4, but the Blue Streaks were one out away from a win when the tide ultimately turned. A two-out single followed by a two-out triple by Tina Murray tied the game at 5-5 and sent the game into extras.

Baldwin-Wallace would complete its rally with a one-out walk off home run by Sydney Kimball -- her only hit of the day -- to earn the split.

John Carroll is now 11-11 overall and 5-5 (5th) in the OAC, while Baldwin Wallace's record moves to 13-12 overall and 7-3 (T-2nd) in league play.
