Box Score 2 Faced with two perhaps must-win games for the John Carroll University softball team, the Blue Streaks responded with six runs in the first game but could not muster any offense in the second game in a split with Capital.
John Carroll won game one 6-4 before dropping a 1-0 decision on Saturday afternoon in Bexley, Ohio. The Blue Streaks' record stands at 15-15, 8-8 while the Crusaders are 18-16, 5-11.
Game OneJohn Carroll's bats awoke in the fifth inning and five runs in the final three innings was enough to push softball past Capital 6-4 in the first game.
Lia Locey and
Rebecca Reid hit back-to-back singles to start the fifth. Senior
Samantha Becker cleared the bases with a 3-run home run to put John Carroll on top 4-1.
Reid provided the pop for the Blue Streaks in the seventh inning enabling JCU to open up the 6-3 advantage. The senior outfielder belted a 2-out, 2-run single to bring in
Alyssa Coleman and
Morgan Robinson.
John Carroll scored its first run of the game in the fourth inning. Coleman clubbed a 2-out double to bring in
Carly Simecek.
Capital looked to rally in the seventh inning with Marisa Koss ripping a 1-out double to gap in right center.
Rachel Byrnes would recover with a strikeout and a groundout to end the rally.
Capital jumped on the board first in the third inning pushing a run across on a Blue Streak error. The Crusader right came one play after an alert
Ashlee Unrue clipped down Capital's Ashley Knowles at the plate on a fielder's choice.
Byrnes picked up the win to move to 13-7. The junior struck out six in the complete game. Reid (three), Coleman (two) and
Erica Chiudioni (two) all finished with multiple hits.
Game TwoGina Tosti pitched another gem for John Carroll. However, the Blue Streaks could not come up with any run support as the Crusaders regrouped for the 1-0 win.
Tosti fired a 4-hit complete game striking out five but suffered her third straight 1-run loss in games in which she started.
John Carroll could not get going offensively as Simecek was the only Blue Streak to reach base. The freshman catcher reached via an error in the second inning and had the Blue and Gold's lone hit in the fourth inning.
Capital scored the game's lone run in the third inning on Koss's RBI single to left field.
Tosti fell to 1-5 on the year. The sophomore does sport a 2.76 ERA.
John Carroll returns to action on Monday with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader with Trine.
