Devine And Engel Take Tiebreakers To Send Women's Tennis To Fifth Straight OAC Semifinal

Opening up play in the OAC Tournament quarterfinals, the John Carroll University women's tennis team looked to clinch its fifth straight trip to Mason, Ohio for the OAC Semifinals.

Squaring off against fifth-seeded Heidelberg John Carroll rallied back to take a 2-1 lead at the end of doubles play. The Blue Streaks' front line won in Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles to give John Carroll the 5-2 win.

Down 5-4 at No. 1 doubles Catherine Engel and Anna Stein rallied back to break serve and take the 8-6 win. The No. 2 doubles pairing of Katherine Devine and Tracy Gibson cruised to an 8-2 win taking the match on a 'Berg double fault.

Gibson cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.

Needing two more points to clinch the match Devine and Engel needed to dig deep and win tiebreakers to give the match to JCU. Devine won in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). Engel cruised to a 6-0 win in the first set before falling 4-6 to Sofey Fugate in the second set. The sophomore came back to take the 7-6 (7-3) win in the third set to clinch the match for John Carroll.

John Carroll advances to play top-seeded Otterbein at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason this weekend.
